Overview

Prof. Hareendra Dissabandara is a Professor in Finance in the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. He obtained his bachelor’s degree; B.Sc. in Management Special Degree from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura in 1993 and Masters Degree; M.Sc. in Management (Finance) from the same university in 2000.  He obtained his Ph.D in Finance from Japan under the prestigious MONBUSHO (Japanese Government Scholarship). His major area of specialization is ‘Corporate Finance and Governance’ and he has done a number of empirical researches including research involving corporate governance in major Japanese corporations.  He has presented his findings at international conferences in the US, UK and Japan; including Global Finance Conference and Japan Society for Applied Management. Prof. Dissabandara’s Career Focus is toward research, consultancy, curriculum development and lecturing in the areas of Corporate Finance and Governance and his teaching interests are in the areas of Corporate Governance, Financial Management, Advanced Corporate Finance, Auditing and Strategic Management. Even at the moment, he is engaging in some Corporate Governance research in global Japanese companies such as Toyota Motor Corporation and Sony Corporation. Prof. Dissabandara is a recognized reviewer and chaired number of International Research Conferences in the area of Finance. He also has published several books that includes;

 He started his career as a Cost Officer of Noritake Lanka Porcelain (Pvt) Ltd., (An Associate Company of Noritake – Japan) in 1988. Then he joined the Auditor General’s Department as an Audit Examiner in 1990. Then he assumed the duties as a Government Accountant of the Sri Lanka Accountancy Service (Ministry of Finance) in 1992. Meanwhile, he was working as a Visiting Lecturer of Technical Colleges and the Ministry of Higher Education, as well as a Visiting Lecturer & Consultant of the Institute for Accounting Studies (IAS), Colombo from 1993 to 2002. In 1995, he joined University of Sri Jayewardenepura as a lecturer.

In addition to the university work, he conducted several workshops on “Self Management”, “Accounting and Internal Control Systems” and a number of management consultancy programmes for several public and private sector organizations. Furthermore, he served as a Visiting Lecturer of the Higher Diploma in Management Course for managers of Hirdaramani (Industries) Ltd., Colombo. During the last eight years he evaluated number of Boards of Directors in key organizations.

Since 2006, he has been actively contributing to introduce Toyota Production System (TPS) in Sri Lankan companies while establishing a Sri Lankan TPS group with the help of National Productivity Secretariat of the Ministry of Labor.

He had been serving as the Director – Capital Market Education & Training (CMET) Division of the Securities and Exchange Commission of Sri Lanka (SEC) since 2008 till 2013. During this 5-year tenure he could contribute a great deal to enhance the knowledge, skills and attitudes of market practitioners, investors, issuers and market institutions through a systematic education and training framework. Among many other, Varana Television Series, Prathilabha Television Series, Milanka Television Series, Kotas Velanda Polai Obai Television Series and various other electronic and printed media contributions other than his public speeches all over the country on awareness-creation about the capital market of Sri Lanka were very well accepted by the general and investing public throughout the last 8 to 10 years. Finally, he became the Director General of SEC in 2012 and served till 2013, during which period the SEC had initiated 10 Key Projects to develop the Sri Lankan Capital Markets balancing both regulatory and market development approaches among many other initiatives. Prof. Dissabandara is also a member of;

At present, he is providing leadership for the faculty accreditation process of the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura.
